How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Carpet

4 min read

We've all been there — one moment you're enjoying a glass of Merlot, the next you're staring at a growing crimson stain on your lovely cream carpet. The good news? Quick action makes all the difference.

What to Do Immediately

First, blot (never rub!) the stain with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Work from the outside in to prevent the stain spreading. The goal is to absorb as much liquid as possible before it sets into the fibres.

Next, apply a small amount of cold water to the stain and continue blotting. Some people swear by white wine or soda water — and there's some truth to it. The carbonation can help lift the pigment.

What NOT to Do

Whatever you do, don't reach for the bleach, hot water, or scrub the area aggressively. Hot water can actually set the stain permanently, while bleach will damage your carpet fibres and likely leave a worse mark than the wine itself.

Avoid shop-bought stain removers unless you're certain they're suitable for your carpet type. Many contain harsh chemicals that can strip colour or leave sticky residues that attract more dirt over time.

When to Call a Professional

If the stain has dried, or if your DIY efforts haven't fully removed it, it's time to call in professional help. At Carpet Monkey, we use specialist Micro-Splitter solutions that break down wine pigments at a molecular level — without harsh chemicals or bleach.

We've successfully treated hundreds of red wine stains across Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. The sooner you call, the better the results — but even older stains can often be significantly improved.

Prevention Tips

Consider having your carpets treated with a stain-protection product after professional cleaning. This creates an invisible barrier that gives you more time to blot up spills before they penetrate the fibres. Ask us about Scotchgard® compatible protection when you book your next clean.
