A Pet Owner's Guide to Keeping Carpets Fresh

6 min read

If you've got a dog, cat or other furry family member, you'll know the struggle: muddy paws, shed hair, the occasional accident, and that lingering pet smell that seems to live in the carpet. The good news is that with a few smart habits and regular professional help, you can have pets and clean carpets.

Daily Habits That Make a Difference

Vacuuming is your best friend. We recommend a quick vacuum of high-traffic areas every other day if you have pets, and a thorough whole-house vacuum at least twice a week. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap allergens and pet dander effectively.

Keep a towel by the back door for wiping muddy paws before your dog comes inside. It takes seconds and saves you hours of cleaning later. In wet weather, consider a washable runner or mat in the hallway to catch the worst of it.

Dealing With Accidents

Accidents happen — especially with puppies, elderly pets, or during illness. The key is speed. Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately with paper towels, then apply a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50) to neutralise the ammonia in urine.

Avoid steam cleaning urine spots yourself — the heat can actually bond the protein to the carpet fibres and make the stain permanent. Instead, blot, treat with vinegar solution, and call us if the stain or odour persists.

For solid messes, let them dry completely before scraping up. It sounds counterintuitive, but it's much easier to remove once solid and you're less likely to push it deeper into the pile.

Tackling Pet Odour

That distinctive 'pet smell' is caused by oils, dander and bacteria building up in the carpet fibres over time. Regular vacuuming helps, but the only way to truly eliminate embedded odours is professional deep cleaning.

Our Micro-Splitter cleaning solutions break down the organic compounds that cause pet odours — without leaving behind any perfumed chemical residue. The result is genuinely clean, fresh-smelling carpet, not carpet that smells of cleaning product masking pet smell.

Professional Cleaning Schedule for Pet Owners

We recommend professional cleaning every 6 to 9 months for pet-owning households. If you have multiple pets, or if any of your animals have frequent accidents, every 4 to 6 months is ideal.

Many of our regular customers in Warminster, Frome and across Wiltshire are pet owners who've found that a consistent cleaning schedule keeps their homes fresh and their carpets lasting years longer than they'd expected.
